This article is part of The Complete Guide to Choosing A/B Testing Tools for E-Commerce (2026)

No single A/B testing tool fits every Shopify store; pick by the constraint that costs you money. If your tests keep coming back flat, the constraint is choosing tests: Apex by DRIP gives every test idea a Likelihood to Win before launch, built on 4.3 million A/B tests from 151,000 shops. For prices, shipping and offers, look at Intelligems, ABConvert or Elevate; for theme tests, Shoplift; for a free start, Shopify Rollouts. Varify.io, Convert and ABlyft run on Shopify as scripts with EU hosting.

01Which A/B Testing Tool Should a Shopify Store Pick in 2026?

Pick the tool that removes your constraint: choosing tests, testing prices and offers, building theme tests, budget, or data handling. None of the tools wins on every count.
Disclosure
We build and sell Apex, so read the Apex section with that in mind. The order of the profiles is not a ranking. This is a documentation comparison, not a hands-on test: we read vendor pages, documentation, pricing pages and review directories and quote what the vendors publish. Prices and features were checked in October 2026. Vendors change both often, so re-check at the source before you buy.

One line per constraint:

  1. Tests keep coming back flat: the constraint is choosing tests. Apex by DRIP gives every test idea a Likelihood to Win before launch.
  2. Prices, shipping and offers: Intelligems, with profit and COGS reporting; ABConvert and Elevate at lower entry prices.
  3. Theme and template tests: Shoplift, built in the Shopify Theme Editor.
  4. Budget: Shopify Rollouts, built into the admin from the Grow plan.
  5. Testing, personalisation and upsells in one app: Visually.io.
  6. Several shop systems or documented EU hosting: Varify.io, Convert or ABlyft, which run on Shopify as scripts.

For all shop systems and five more tools, read our 15-tool comparison of A/B testing tools for online shops. Most tools here also have an Apex vs page, linked in their profiles.

04What Decides the Choice on Shopify More Than Feature Lists?

Four things decide which tool pays off: how it runs on the store, which commercial tests it runs, how it bills, and how you choose what to test.

How the tool runs on the store

Rollouts is native. Shopify apps use theme app extensions, the Web Pixel and Shopify Functions. Script-based tools add a JavaScript snippet to the theme. The route decides what a tool can reach: Shopify Functions make price and shipping tests possible, while a script mostly changes what the page shows.

Which commercial tests it can run

Prices, shipping, offers and checkout are where Shopify tools differ most. Several apps test them, each with conditions: a plan tier, a minimum order volume, Shopify Plus for checkout, or carrier-calculated rates for shipping.

How it bills

Billing counts site-wide visitors (Shoplift), orders (Intelligems, Elevate, Visually.io), test orders (ABConvert), tested users (Convert), or a flat price per domain (Varify.io). Model the bill on your peak month.

How you choose what to test

Industry data puts the share of experiments that win at 10 to 20 percent, per Ronny Kohavi. A faster editor ships more tests at the same rate. If most tests come back flat, the constraint sits before the build. Some tools generate ideas, a few rank them, and Apex shows a prediction per idea backed by a database of observed tests.

05Does Shopify Have Built-In A/B Testing?

Yes, since 2026. Shopify Rollouts runs A/B experiments on theme, checkout and customer account changes from the Grow plan. It reports conversion-type metrics and no revenue per experiment.

Shopify announced Rollouts in December 2025, opened A/B tests to its plans on March 31, 2026, and extended them to checkout and customer accounts on June 5, 2026. In Shopify’s words: “Schedule theme changes and A/B test with Rollouts, built directly into the admin.”

A store on Grow or above can now run a theme or checkout experiment without installing anything. Experiments report no revenue or AOV, Shopify publishes no statistical method, and prices and Liquid template changes cannot be tested. Dedicated tools fill those gaps, at a price.

Shopify’s separate SimGym app simulates shoppers with AI agents, with Shopify’s own caveat that “results might differ from actual buyer behavior.”

06How Do the 10 Tools Compare, Fact by Fact?

Which commercial tests each tool runs on Shopify, and how each reads results. “None found” means we did not find it in the vendor’s documentation in October 2026.

Two notes: Shoplift’s own guide calls its shipping threshold setup “very technical”. Convert’s pages differ on checkout (May 2026 and July 2025), so ask Convert which applies to your store.

07What Do Apex, Rollouts and the Shopify Apps Do, in Detail?

Seven profiles in one format: an at-a-glance list, documented capabilities, limitations and where the tool is not the right choice. The order is not a ranking.

Apex by DRIP: best for stores whose tests keep coming back flat

  • Best for: shops whose tests keep coming back flat: the constraint is choosing which tests to run, not building them.
  • Can test: pages and page elements, parallel tests on the same traffic with optional exclusion groups, A/A tests, redirect tests, global holdout, feature flags and staged rollouts.
  • Shop systems: installs as a Shopify app (two-click install via link, server-side tracking, first-party data).
  • Data location: hosting in the EU plus UK; GDPR in place; ISO 27001 and SOC 2 in progress.
  • Entry price: pricing is not published; a card-free free tier for one store exists; book a call.
  • Main strength: the memory of millions of observed tests behind every idea, so selection improves before anything is built.
  • Main limitation: the price is not published.

Apex by DRIP is an A/B testing platform for companies selling online that predicts which tests will win before they go live, built on one of the largest A/B test databases in e-commerce. It has three layers: a test memory, a testing tool and managed execution. The test memory holds 4.3 million A/B tests from 151,000 shops, collected since 2011, and every test idea gets a Likelihood to Win before launch: one percent figure per test idea, shown with how many tests back it. Within a shop, the top third of ideas won 1.4 to 1.6 times as often (press release, September 29, 2026).

Footnote on Likelihood to Win
Likelihood to Win ranks an idea against the shop’s own backlog. It is not a win probability in the strict sense.

The testing tool builds, launches and evaluates tests directly in the shop, with a code editor and a visual builder called Operator. An MCP connection lets a shop owner build and read tests from ChatGPT or Claude without a terminal. On Shopify, Apex shows profit per test, and Guardian stops a test automatically at a revenue loss threshold. Heat maps are shown per variant. Managed execution means tests built, checked, launched and read together with the DRIP team.

Apex scores each idea against 4.3 million observed A/B tests from 151,000 shops and shows how many tests back each score. The nearest published figure among the vendors we checked is Kameleoon’s Ideate, trained on more than 20,000 experiments; Varify cites 10,000 or more test patterns; no other vendor in this comparison publishes a count of tests behind its recommendations (vendor pages checked October 2026). Shoplift’s “millions of shopper sessions” and SimGym’s “billions of purchases” count sessions and purchases, not A/B tests.

Limitations. The price is not published; a card-free free tier for one store exists, and beyond it the route to a price is a call. Prices, shipping and checkout are not among Apex’s documented test types. There is no public review profile yet.

Where Apex is not the right choice:

  • A team that already picks winning tests well gets less from the prediction layer.
  • A shop that cannot ship a test a week yet should build that habit on a lighter tool beforehand; buying prediction before you can execute is the wrong order.
  • Anyone who needs a published price list before a conversation.

Shopify Rollouts: best for a free native start

  • Best for: stores on Grow or above that want experiments without another app.
  • Can test: theme edits or a replacement theme, checkout and customer accounts, discounts, catalog status.
  • Shop systems: Shopify Online Store; headless and custom storefront checkouts are not supported.
  • Data location: hosting region not published; Shopify holds Level 1 PCI DSS and SOC 2 Type II reports.
  • Entry price: no separate fee listed; experiments need Grow, €79 a month billed yearly or €105 monthly (European pricing page, checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: testing built into the admin, at no listed extra fee.
  • Main limitation: conversion-type metrics, with no published statistical method and no revenue or AOV per experiment.

Rollouts come in three types: Launch, Event and Experiment. Experiments split traffic 50/50 by default, and “each Experiment gets its own mutually exclusive segment of visitor traffic.” Changes are made in Shopify’s theme editor on an automatic copy of the live theme. Market-specific targeting needs Advanced or Plus.

Theme experiments report conversion rate, bounce rate, reached checkout and add to cart; “You can’t customize the available metrics.” Gross sales, AOV and orders appear for Launch rollouts, not for experiments. WeltPixel found no documented way to see variant assignment in GA4 (July 2026). Side by side: Apex vs Shopify Rollouts.

Where Rollouts is not the right choice:

  • Stores on Basic that want A/B tests: experiments need Grow or higher.
  • Headless or custom storefronts, which experiments do not cover.
  • Teams that judge tests on revenue, AOV or profit per visitor.
  • Price tests or Liquid template tests, which rollouts do not support.

Intelligems: best for price, shipping and offer tests

  • Best for: merchants who want to test prices, shipping and offers and read the result as profit.
  • Can test: prices, discounts, bundles, upsells, shipping rates and thresholds, themes, templates, content, checkout blocks (Plus), post-purchase offers.
  • Shop systems: Shopify, every plan; checkout tests need Plus, shipping rate tests Advanced or Plus; headless via a package.
  • Data location: region not published; data “will be transferred outside of Europe, including to Canada and the United States”.
  • Entry price: Smart Content $69 a month at the entry tier; priced per store by monthly orders, “no per-visitor charges and no overages” (checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: one Shopify app tests prices, shipping, offers, checkout and content with profit and COGS reporting.
  • Main limitation: Shopify and no other shop system, and price testing needs a team-built integration with a 3-month minimum.

Intelligems puts it as “Most tools optimize for clicks. We optimize for profit.” Tests are built in a Visual Builder, an AI Visual Builder, or with code; the Atlas agent builds content and theme tests from text, but price and shipping types are “not yet supported” by it. Statistics are Bayesian, with a guideline of “300+ orders per test group” and “7+ days”. An MCP server can create drafts and start or end tests after a confirmation. Shopify App Store: 4.8 from 198 reviews (October 10, 2026).

Limitations: the price integration “typically” takes “3-5 business days”; Smart Pricing and Unlimited carry a 3-month minimum with no trial; there is no live chat. Compare: Apex vs Intelligems.

Where Intelligems is not the right choice:

  • Teams that want to trial price testing before committing.
  • Teams that need live chat support.
  • Buyers who need SOC 2, a DPA or EU hosting documented up front.

Shoplift: best for theme and template tests in the Theme Editor

  • Best for: brands whose tests are mostly theme and template changes.
  • Can test: page templates, header, footer, navigation and global styles, URL redirects; prices on Advanced and Pro.
  • Shop systems: Shopify and Shopify Plus; headless is “not currently supported”.
  • Data location: data “is transferred to and processed in the United States”; DPA with EEA SCCs.
  • Entry price: Core $99 a month or $74 billed annually, up to 50k monthly visitors; 14-day trial (checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: variants are built on Shopify’s own themes in the Theme Editor.
  • Main limitation: no headless, checkout or A/B/n tests.

Shoplift calls itself “The CRO Platform Built for Shopify”. Variants are edited in the Theme Editor or with Liquid and JavaScript. Parallel tests have “no limit”, with automatic mutual exclusion by test type. Statistics are Bayesian, with “Probability to Win”. Lift Assist™ inserts recommended theme sections but “does not automatically add content”. Billing counts site-wide visitors, “not tested visitors”, and tests pause over the limit. Shopify App Store: 4.9 from 133 reviews (October 10, 2026).

Limitations: price tests need a single-currency store and do not work with Replo or PageFly products; Shoplift’s own pages give page speed costs from 1 to 4 points. Compare: Apex vs Shoplift, or both apps at once in Apex vs Shoplift vs Intelligems.

Where Shoplift is not the right choice:

  • Headless Shopify stores.
  • Tests with three or more variants, or checkout page tests.
  • Price tests in multi-currency stores.

ABConvert: best for many commercial test types read on profit

  • Best for: growing brands that want commercial tests without a developer.
  • Can test: nine types: price, shipping, offer, URL redirect, template, theme, visual editor, checkout, combined.
  • Shop systems: all Shopify plans, with plan conditions per test type; no headless.
  • Data location: “MongoDB Atlas, Linode and Google Cloud”, region not published; DPA by email.
  • Entry price: Starter $99 a month or $74 billed yearly for 1,000 test orders; price tests from Growth at $199 (checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: nine Shopify-native test types, read on profit per visitor from the store’s own costs.
  • Main limitation: Shopify and no other system, and no support for headless Shopify.

ABConvert calls itself “The A/B testing platform built for Shopify merchants.” Price and shipping tests run through Shopify Functions; offer tests cover “percentage off, dollar off, BOGO, free gifts”. Profit per visitor is “Revenue - Product Cost - Shipping Cost - Transaction Fee”. Results count as significant at 95 percent, and a sample ratio check is built in. Billing counts test orders, “not your whole store”. Shopify App Store: 4.7 from 83 reviews (October 10, 2026).

Limitations: the statistical method, guardrails and holdouts are not published, and low reviews criticise the support process. Compare: Apex vs ABConvert.

Where ABConvert is not the right choice:

  • Headless Shopify stores.
  • Teams that want price tests on the entry plan.
  • Buyers who require ISO 27001, SOC 2 or a stated EU hosting region.

Elevate: best for price and shipping tests at a lower entry price

  • Best for: smaller stores that want price and shipping tests.
  • Can test: pages, themes, content, prices, shipping rates and thresholds, offers, product images, five checkout components (Plus).
  • Shop systems: Shopify; headless via an SDK on Premium.
  • Data location: region, DPA and subprocessors not published; “Only anonymous behavioral data is collected”.
  • Entry price: Basic $49 a month up to 1,000 orders; price tests from Standard at $99; 14-day trial including price testing (checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: price, shipping and checkout tests from $99 a month for stores up to 1,000 orders.
  • Main limitation: no published hosting region, DPA, subprocessors or security certification.

Elevate calls itself “an A/B testing and personalization platform built for Shopify.” Price tests work without duplicate products “on any Shopify plan, including non Plus”. Statistics are Bayesian with a default 90 percent threshold, plus visitor, conversion and three-day minimums. Goals include profit per visitor, which needs COGS. The MCP server reads data and “cannot create, start, pause, or end an experiment.” Shopify App Store: 4.9 from 143 reviews (October 10, 2026).

Limitations: the script is “render-blocking by design to prevent flicker”, with a vendor-stated 1 to 2 point page speed impact, and data is removed 48 hours after uninstall, so export first.

Where Elevate is not the right choice:

  • Buyers who need a signed DPA, SOC 2 or ISO 27001 before purchase.
  • Teams that need support outside business hours.
  • Non-Plus stores that want checkout tests.

Visually.io: best for testing, personalisation and upsells in one app

  • Best for: brands that want tests, personalisation and upsells from one vendor.
  • Can test: themes, templates, redirects, discounts and shipping per the listing; prices on the Scale plan with 600+ orders or Shopify Plus with 7,500+.
  • Shop systems: Shopify and Shopify Plus; headless via a Hydrogen reference project.
  • Data location: region not published; transfers to Canada and the US stated; SOC 2 and GDPR programs “in the process”.
  • Entry price: $19 a month up to 200 orders; 14-day trial (website, checked October 2026; the App Store listing differs).
  • Main strength: testing, personalisation, recommendations, upsells and checkout blocks in one app.
  • Main limitation: changes are applied client-side with no documented server-side option.

Visually.io calls itself a “One-stop, AI powered A/B testing & personalization platform for ecommerce”. Tests are built in a visual editor, with code, or with Copilot, which edits by natural language. Statistics are Bayesian; a result is significant at “Odds to Win >80%” once a minimum sample is met. A Global Control Group holds back traffic from all tests. From 7,500 orders a month, plans include a “Fully Managed” CRO plan. Shopify App Store: 4.8 from 147 reviews (October 10, 2026).

Limitations: profit metrics were not found, and low reviews mention leftover code after uninstall. Compare: Apex vs Visually.

Where Visually.io is not the right choice:

  • Smaller shops that want price tests.
  • Buyers who require a completed SOC 2 report or ISO 27001 today.
  • Teams that need auto-stop or sample ratio checks.

08Which Script-Based Tools Run on Shopify?

Varify.io, Convert Experiences and ABlyft are not built for Shopify, but they run on it through a theme snippet or a connector app. They suit stores that need one tool across several shop systems, or documented hosting in Germany.

A script-based tool changes the page in the browser and reads orders back from Shopify. That covers most page and theme tests, but reaches prices, shipping and checkout less easily than an app built on Shopify Functions.

Varify.io: best for a flat price on any shop system

  • Best for: teams that want no-code tests at a flat price, on Shopify or another shop system.
  • Can test: storefront pages via the snippet; Plus checkout via a separate app.
  • Shop systems: any shop that loads JavaScript, including Shopify on any plan.
  • Data location: AWS Frankfurt plus Cloudflare; DPA downloadable; SOC 2 “SOON”.
  • Entry price: Growth €199 a month billed annually, one domain, unlimited traffic; checkout app $119 a month (checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: a flat price per domain with unlimited traffic.
  • Main limitation: default statistics are one-sided frequentist tests; two-sided and Bayesian need Pro.

Varify.io is a Munich-area company whose snippet installs “Via GTM or directly”. Its 2026 AI features include prompt-based variants and an MCP server that can “create, start, pause experiments”. Results come from your analytics, such as GA4. Limitations: Growth allows five active experiments, and price and shipping tests are not published as features. OMR Reviews: 4.8 from 113 reviews. Compare: Apex vs Varify.

Where Varify.io is not the right choice:

  • Teams that need sequential testing or bandits, both marked “SOON”.
  • Multi-brand or multi-country setups, since each plan covers one domain.
  • Teams that want profit or guardrail metrics in the tool.

Convert Experiences: best for EU hosting with certifications and public prices

  • Best for: teams that want published prices, EU hosting and certifications.
  • Can test: pages, themes, prices via Cart Transform Functions; multivariate and full-stack on Pro.
  • Shop systems: Shopify through the free Convert Experiences app, which “requires a Convert.com account”; other shop systems too.
  • Data location: “EU-based servers in Frankfurt by default”; ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2; free signed DPA.
  • Entry price: Growth $299 a month billed annually, 100K tested users a month (checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: published flat pricing with Frankfurt hosting, certifications and three statistics engines.
  • Main limitation: on Shopify it is a connector with no App Store reviews, and checkout-level price tests need Plus.

Convert installs on Shopify with a theme app extension, Shopify Pixels and order webhooks. It offers a “switchable Frequentist / Bayesian engine”, sequential testing on Pro, and sample ratio checks on every plan. Heat maps and session recordings come with every plan. Convert’s own Shopify tool list puts Convert at the top; read it, and this page, as vendor content. Compare: Apex vs Convert.

Where Convert is not the right choice:

  • Stores that need checkout-level price tests without Shopify Plus.
  • Teams that need multivariate tests or feature flags on the entry plan.
  • Merchants who choose apps by App Store reviews.

ABlyft: best for developer teams with strict data protection

  • Best for: developer-led teams that want code control and minimal data collection.
  • Can test: page content, redirects, Shopify draft themes and alternate templates.
  • Shop systems: any site; on Shopify, a theme.liquid snippet with webhook and Web Pixel tracking.
  • Data location: “Hosting and Storage in Germany”; “We do not store any personal data. Nothing.”
  • Entry price: free plan with limits not published; paid plans on quote (checked October 2026).
  • Main strength: German hosting, no stored personal data or IP addresses, and localStorage instead of cookies by default.
  • Main limitation: a theme snippet without an App Store app, and no documented price, discount or checkout tests.

ABlyft is a Kiel company. Store Leads counted 961 stores using it on October 2, 2026, 75.5 percent of them on Shopify. Variations are written in JavaScript and CSS, with revisions stored in GitHub or Bitbucket. Its AI, Lumen, suggests ideas and generates variation code. OMR Reviews: 4.9 from 129 reviews; reviewers note that complex tests need programming skills. Compare: Apex vs ABlyft.

Where ABlyft is not the right choice:

  • Teams that want public prices.
  • Teams without developer capacity.
  • Merchants who want an app install or native price and offer tests.

09Which Other Options Are Worth Knowing?

Enterprise platforms such as VWO, Optimizely, Kameleoon and GrowthBook also run on Shopify, and newer AI-run tools target Shopify stores.

VWO, Optimizely, Kameleoon and GrowthBook are profiled in our 15-tool comparison, with one-on-one pages for VWO, Optimizely, Kameleoon and GrowthBook. They suit teams that need server-side SDKs or enterprise contracts.

AI-run tools aimed at Shopify are newer. Spar ranks ideas and writes variants, and “a human reviews and approves the test before anything is deployed”. Dalton calls itself “Autonomous CRO for ecommerce”. Neither publishes a database of observed tests behind its suggestions (vendor pages checked October 2026).

10How Should a Shopify Store Choose a Testing Tool?

Name your constraint, check your Shopify plan against each tool’s conditions, model the bill on your peak month, ask for data documents, and run an A/A test in the trial. Five steps, in that order.
  1. Name the constraint. If tests ran but few won, it is choosing; if good ideas waited for months, it is building; if legal held up the contract, it is data handling.
  2. Check your Shopify plan. Checkout tests need Plus in most apps, and Rollouts experiments need Grow. Headless stores rule out Shoplift, ABConvert and Rollouts.
  3. Model the bill on your peak month: visitor, order and tested-user pricing rise in a sale month.
  4. Ask for a DPA, a subprocessor list or a certificate in writing if you need one. Several tools here publish none.
  5. Run an A/A test in the trial. If two identical versions do not come out even, fix tracking before you trust any winner.

Keep your test history in a place you own; some apps delete data soon after uninstall. Our guide on switching without losing test history covers what to export.

11What Is the Verdict for Shopify Stores in 2026?

The pick follows the constraint. Apex by DRIP fits stores whose tests keep coming back flat; the table gives the pick and the catch for each other case.

It depends on the constraint. Tests keep coming back flat: Apex by DRIP, which gives every idea a Likelihood to Win before launch. Price, shipping and offer tests: Intelligems, or ABConvert and Elevate at lower entry prices. Theme tests: Shoplift. A free start: Shopify Rollouts. Several shop systems or EU hosting: Varify.io, Convert or ABlyft.

Yes. Shopify Rollouts runs experiments on themes, checkout and customer accounts from the Grow plan, at no listed extra fee (checked October 2026). Experiments report conversion-type metrics, not revenue or AOV, and prices and Liquid template changes cannot be tested.

Several, each with conditions (checked October 2026). Intelligems, through an integration built with your team and a 3-month minimum. Elevate, from its Standard plan, on any Shopify plan. ABConvert, from its Growth plan. Shoplift, on Advanced and Pro for single-currency stores. Visually.io, on Scale with 600+ monthly orders or Shopify Plus with 7,500+. Convert, through Cart Transform Functions. Shopify Rollouts does not test prices.

Yes, with conditions. Shopify Rollouts tests checkout and customer accounts since June 2026. Intelligems, ABConvert, Elevate and Varify.io’s checkout app test checkout content on Shopify Plus; ABConvert also tests delivery and payment changes on any plan. Shoplift does not test checkout pages directly.

Documented EU hosting here: ABlyft (Germany), Varify.io (AWS Frankfurt), Convert (Frankfurt) and Apex by DRIP (EU plus UK). Shoplift processes data in the United States; Intelligems and Visually.io state transfers to Canada and the US; ABConvert, Elevate and Shopify state no region (October 2026).

Most of them (checked October 2026). Intelligems, ABConvert, Elevate (read-only), Visually.io (reporting), Varify.io, Convert and ABlyft offer MCP servers. Shoplift connects through an HTTP API. Apex by DRIP has an MCP connection so a shop owner builds and reads tests from ChatGPT or Claude without a terminal. For Shopify Rollouts, none was found.

The price of Apex is not published. A card-free free tier for one store exists. To find out what fits your store, book a call with the DRIP team.

Some tools give an estimate before launch. Apex by DRIP gives every test idea a Likelihood to Win, shown with how many tests back it, drawn from 4.3 million A/B tests from 151,000 shops. It ranks an idea against the shop’s own backlog and is not a win probability in the strict sense. No estimate replaces the test.
