02What Is Each Tool Built For?
Apex by DRIP is an A/B testing platform for companies selling online that predicts which tests will win before they go live, built on one of the largest A/B test databases in e-commerce. The method is called Prediction-Based Experimentation. In plain words: we know what shops like yours tested and which tests won.
- Test memory: 4.3 million A/B tests from 151,000 shops, collected since 2011. Every test idea gets a Likelihood to Win before launch.
- Testing tool: build, launch and evaluate tests directly in the shop, with heat maps per variant, profit per test and the chat.
- Managed execution: tests built, checked, launched and read together with the DRIP team.
Convert Experiences, from Convert Insights Inc. (founded 2009), calls itself a “Proven A/B Testing Tool” that is “Reliable & Affordable”, and describes a “Privacy-first A/B testing and personalization platform” for teams who want a “full-featured experimentation tool without enterprise pricing or vendor lock-in”. Convert states “40,000+ sites optimized over 17 years”.
So Convert gives a team a wide set of test types and statistics engines and leaves the choice of what to test with the team. Apex is built for that choice.
03What Can You Test With Apex and With Convert?
The two overlap on page tests and differ at the edges. “Not listed” below means the capability is not part of what Apex documents today, so treat it as not available.
| Test type | Apex by DRIP | Convert Experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Pages and page elements | Yes | Yes, including product and collection pages |
| Redirect or split URL tests | Redirect tests | Split URL on all plans |
| Parallel tests | On the same traffic, with optional exclusion groups | Growth: 5 projects with 5 experiences each; Pro: unlimited; “Collision prevention” |
| A/A tests and global holdout | Yes | Holdouts not published |
| Feature flags and rollouts | Feature flags and staged rollouts | Feature flags and full stack (“6 SDKs”) on Pro |
| Multivariate and multi-page | Not listed | On Pro |
| Whole themes | Not listed | “test the effectiveness of different Shopify themes” |
| Prices | Not listed | “Included on every paid plan via Cart Transform Functions (Shopify Plus required for checkout-level pricing)” |
| Shipping thresholds | Not listed | “Via JavaScript variations and audience targeting rules”, no dedicated Shopify workflow |
| Checkout | Not listed | July 2025: “Direct checkout A/B testing isn’t currently possible”; checkout-level price changes on Shopify Plus (May 2026 page) |
Said plainly: if your next tests are about price points, free shipping thresholds or a full theme switch, Convert can run them and Apex does not list them. Convert also names a use case of its own: “Testing whether Shopify apps impact performance”.
04How Do Tests Get Built and Launched?
Apex
In Apex, an experiment is config as code. You work in the code editor, in the visual builder (Operator), or through the CLI, which is the developer path. CLI preview links let you see a variant before launch, and QA runs via preview. Four QA checks are shown to clients: all devices, tracking and targeting, responsive, and matches design.
Through the MCP connection a shop owner builds and reads tests from ChatGPT or Claude without a terminal. With managed execution, tests are built, checked, launched and read together with the DRIP team.
Convert Experiences
Convert offers “Both WYSIWYG & 5 code editors”. Its “AI Wizard” surfaces “alternative copy options based on established persuasion and behavior models” in the Visual Editor. QA mode and a “QA Wizard” are on all plans. Teams also get “Collision prevention”, a “Request Approval System”, and staging and production environments.
Convert runs an MCP server to “read results, run audits, and build tests in plain language” with “Claude (including Claude Desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients”. It is available on “any Convert account from Growth to Enterprise with API access”.
05How Are Winners Chosen Before Launch?
In Apex, every test idea gets a Likelihood to Win before launch: one percent figure per test idea, shown with how many tests back it. It comes from the test memory of 4.3 million A/B tests from 151,000 shops, collected since 2011. The backlog classifies ideas automatically and scores them.
Two checks sit behind it. In a holdout check, within a shop, the top third of ideas won 1.4 to 1.6 times as often (press release, September 29, 2026). And predictions for 33 brands were scored and frozen in early September 2026. We publish the first results from November 2026.
Convert’s AI works on a different step. The AI Wizard proposes “alternative copy options” in the Visual Editor, and “Convert Intelligence®” is an in-app assistant listed as “(Beta)” on the Growth plan. Convert does not publish the training data behind them, and we found no per-idea win prediction on convert.com (checked October 2026).
We ran the same check on every tool in this comparison series. Apex scores each idea against 4.3 million observed A/B tests from 151,000 shops and shows how many tests back each score. The nearest published figure in this comparison is Kameleoon’s Ideate, trained on more than 20,000 experiments; Varify cites 10,000 or more test patterns; no other vendor in this comparison publishes a count of tests behind its recommendations (vendor pages checked October 2026).
06Which Statistics and Metrics Does Each Tool Use?
Apex
Apex uses fixed-horizon statistics with confidence. Each test reports its main metric, lift and runtime revenue per test. On Shopify, Apex reports profit per test (“optimise for profit”: discount share, refund share, profit per sale). Guardian stops a test automatically at a revenue loss threshold.
Convert Experiences
Convert offers a “switchable Frequentist / Bayesian engine” plus sequential testing. The “95% confidence level is default but customizable”. Its sequential method uses Asymptotic Confidence Sequences, which its docs call “anytime-valid”. Sequential testing and multi-arm bandit are Pro features.
For multivariate tests Convert applies a “Šidák correction”, and it runs “Chi-square Sample Ratio Mismatch detection at 99% confidence on every plan”. Revenue goals handle outliers by “Winsorizing/Capping”. Profit metrics, guardrails, auto-stop and holdouts: not published. It lists “90+ native integrations”, including GA4, Hotjar, Clarity and Klaviyo.
Said plainly: if you want a Bayesian readout, sequential testing or a bandit, Convert has them and Apex does not list them. If you want profit per test and an automatic stop when a variant loses revenue, Apex has them and Convert does not publish them.
07How Much Do Apex and Convert Cost?
Convert bills by monthly tested users. Its pricing page, checked October 2026, lists these plans:
| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing | Included | Overage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Growth | $299/mo | $399/mo | 100K tested users per month | $399 per 100K |
| Pro | $420/mo | $599/mo | 100K tested users per month | $699 per 250K |
| Enterprise | Price on request | Not offered (annual billing) | 12M+ tested users per year | $699 per 250K |
Pro adds multivariate, multi-page, full stack, feature flags, bandit and sequential testing, SSO and phone support. Monthly plans cancel anytime, and annual plans “don’t auto-renew”. Convert offers a 15-day free trial with no credit card; a free tier: none found.
Apex pricing is not published. A card-free free tier for one store exists. For everything else, book a call. If you need a published price list before a conversation, that is a real limitation of Apex.
08Where Is the Data Hosted, and Which Certifications Apply?
| Apex by DRIP | Convert Experiences | |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | EU plus UK | “Carbon-Neutral Servers in Frankfurt, Germany”; “EU-based servers in Frankfurt by default” |
| GDPR | GDPR in place; DPAs for US tools | “GDPR, TTDSG, and BDSG Compliant”; free signed DPA with Standard Contractual Clauses |
| Certifications | ISO 27001 and SOC 2 in progress | ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2, HIPAA, CCPA |
| Tracking and consent | Server-side tracking, first-party data; consent apps for most Shopify GDPR apps supported | First-party cookies, no personal data storage required; two consent modes; works with Cookiebot, OneTrust and other CMPs |
Convert states: “Convert Experiences does not know any cross-border data transfer from to or from outside EEA borders in its infrastructure.” Its consent setup offers two modes: block cookies but show experiments before consent, or block both cookies and experiments until consent. A public subprocessor page: none found.
09Where Is Convert the Better Choice?
- You need price tests on Shopify. Convert includes price tests on every paid plan via Cart Transform Functions, with checkout-level pricing on Shopify Plus, and multivariate tests on Pro. Apex does not list price or multivariate tests.
- You need certifications in place today. Convert lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2 and hosts in Frankfurt by default. Apex’s ISO 27001 and SOC 2 are in progress.
- You want a published price and a choice of statistics. Growth starts at $299 per month billed annually (checked October 2026), with a 15-day trial and no credit card, and Convert lets you switch between frequentist, Bayesian and sequential engines.
10Where Is Apex the Better Choice?
- Your tests keep coming back flat. The constraint is choosing which tests to run, not building them. Apex gives every idea a Likelihood to Win from the memory of 4.3 million A/B tests from 151,000 shops, so selection improves before anything is built.
- You want profit per test and a guardrail. On Shopify, Apex reports profit per test (discount share, refund share, profit per sale), and Guardian stops a test at a revenue loss threshold. Convert does not publish profit metrics or auto-stop.
- You want help running the program. With managed execution, tests are built, checked, launched and read together with the DRIP team.
Apex is not the right choice for everyone. A shop that cannot ship a test a week yet should build that habit on a lighter tool first; buying prediction before you can execute is the wrong order.
11Apex or Convert: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Convert Experiences if your constraint is the toolkit: price tests, multivariate tests, a Bayesian or sequential engine, certifications in place and a price you can read before a call. Choose Apex by DRIP if your constraint is selection: your tests keep coming back flat and you want to know which ideas are likely to win before anything is built. A team that already picks winning tests well gets less from the prediction layer, and a shop that cannot ship a test a week yet should build that habit first. If you are unsure, look at your last ten tests: many flat results point to selection, a long list of ideas you could not build points to the toolkit.
